Justified and ancient...

The KLF is an English group formed in 1987 and originally composed of Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty. Group which begins by being called The JAMs (for Justified Ancients Of Mummu) and which released a first Single "All you need is love" the same year. Title which samples "All you need is love" by the Beatles with "Touch me (I want your body)" by Samantha Fox and which openly attacks the English press and its outrageous way of dealing with everything directly or indirectly related to AIDS...

They will then try to mix the ABBA and their "Dancing Queen" on their new title, something which will be refused to them because not authorized by the group. With the consequence of a title that will never see the light of day and which will simply end up in the trash…

On the other hand, their sampling of Whitney Houston's "I wanna dance with somebody" with the theme of Mission Impossible to which the theme of Shaft is added will not pose a problem for him. Just like Petula Clark's "Downton" with a Ghospel version "Downton". Two new titles which will allow them above all to win two new successes, just that…

Also in 1987 they also embarked on the concept-project Disco 2000 which will produce a first Single "I gotta CD". Single to the most relative success…

They will produce their first title under the name of KLF in 1988, Single named "Burn the bastards" which allows them to get a first success under this new name.

New Single also for Disco 2000 with the title "One love nation", Single which will not do better than their previous title under this name unfortunately...

After The JAMs, after Disco 2000, after KLF, it is now The Timelords' turn to see the light of day also in 1988. A new name that will finally bring them glory and fortune with the enormous title "Doctorin' the Tardis", a title that samples the Doctor Who theme, "Block buster" by Sweet and "Rock and Roll (Part two)" by Gary Glitter.

The year 1989 will prove to be a year of transition with Disco 2000 which releases a new title "Uptight (Everything's alright)", a title which will still not do better than its predecessors. Then it's KLF's turn to come back in the dance with the title "3 a.m.; eternal", a title that will also go unnoticed to say the least, at least this year...

It's the transition to the 90s that will really change the situation with, to begin with, the release of "What time is love ? “, a Single already released in 1988 but which had gone unnoticed to say the least. Quite the opposite this time around...

The following year it was "3 a.m.: eternal" which emerged in turn, as did "Last train to Traincentral" title released in 1990 and passed under the radar. These 2 releases will bring the duo the biggest hits of their entire discography on the Singles side, just that. Titles that will be found on their album "The white room", an album which will also remain as the best ranked of all.

Album which will also produce another title of very high caliber with "Justified and ancient" still in 1991.

Unfortunately, the side a little too 'wacky' of the 2 acolytes will reach its limits in 1992 when they will want to throw buckets of blood on the public and disembowel a sheep on stage during the ceremony of the Brit Awards, a delirious project stopped dead by BBC lawyers. An excess that will be too much and will precipitate the inevitable fall of the duo thereafter.

Tracks :

1987...a first title which immediately gives the tendency to know that this group has something different from the others. And the sequel will prove it in an obvious way...

1987...their way of sampling the titles of others will very quickly allow them to stand out from the crowd and allow them to land a first major hit with this title...

1987...a title that will not be released officially because the group will not have succeeded in finding an agreement with Abba concerning the use of one of their reference titles...

1987...this one, on the other hand, will see the light of day and will allow the group to demonstrate once again all its know-how in the art of sampling the titles of others...

1987...a plethoric year 1987 in terms of titles and which saw the group string together hit after hit. At least in the Independent Charts and only in England for now...

1987... all their titles will not be classified all the same during this year 1987. Surprisingly this one will pass 'through'...

1987... business will resume with this one and show that the slight air hole on the previous title was nothing to worry about, on the contrary...

1988... now it's up to the band to produce THE track that will finally allow them to stand out from the crowd once and for all...

1988...it will not happen at the beginning of the year but it could be that this year 1988 is the good side of the big take-off...

1988...first major success of the year. A success that announces another to come of much greater magnitude...

1988 ... a title produced in parallel with the KLF adventure under the name 'Disco 2000' but which will not benefit from the dynamics of the success of its parent company ...

1988 ... then comes THE title that will change everything and literally explode the notoriety of the group. A title that will undoubtedly remain as one of the most emblematic titles of the year on a planetary level. HU-GE !

1989...a feat that the group will not be able to repeat the following year unfortunately. But nothing to worry about at this stage, especially when you see what is looming on the horizon...

1990...return in force to the front of the stage with this new planetary top hit. A comeback that allows the group to show once again that they are indeed one of the biggest musical phenomena of the moment...

1991...this title, like its predecessor, had already been released in previous years but had gone unnoticed to say the least. Which will not be the case this time, far from it !

1991... ditto for this one. The notoriety of the group reaches its climax at the planetary level in this year 1991 and offers to the latter a direct ticket for the posterity largely deserved !

1991...third mega hit of the year, who could say better ? The group literally walks on water and no one at this stage is able to challenge its total supremacy over events...

1991...after having lined up 3 consecutive mega hits, the group will ease off somewhat on the Charts side with a level of success that is, to say the least, limited for this title...

1991... business will resume directly behind and allow the group to sign its 4th mega hit of the year. Incredible but true !

1993... they will have given everything during the year 1991 and the sequel will have nothing to compare with this exceptional year in all respects...

1997...an adventure which will not go further than this year 1997 and which ends in relative anonymity. Hard, very hard law of the trade...
