Funny how time slips away...

The Spinners is an American group formed in 1954 in Ferndale and originally composed of Pervis Jackson, Billy Henderson, C.P. Spencer, James Edwards, Bobby Smith and Henry Fambrough.

Group which released a first single "That's what girls are made for" in 1961 and for a first try it was rather successful since the group will win its first classified title.

Success that they will have difficulty confirming since they will have to wait 4 years before repeating the feat thanks to the release of the single "I'll always love you" in 1965.

First album "The original Spinners" in 1967, an album which will mainly cover previously released titles and which will only experience a very limited level of success.

It is their second album "2nd time around" which will allow them in 1970 to finally move up a gear, in particular thanks to the single "It's a shame".

The beginning of consecration comes as for him from the year 1972, year which sees the group changing label and moving from Motown to Atlantic Records. A change of label that will boost them like never before since they will land one of their biggest hits on the Singles side that year with the title "Could it be I'm falling in love".

Singles taken from the album "Spinners" which was released a year later in 1973 and which gave them their first big success in the Albums Charts.

Big successes that will be repeated in the following years, notably with the albums "Mighty love" and "New and improved" in 1974 as well as "Pick of the letter" in 1975.

Other albums will be released later, but none will be able to match the level of success achieved by those of the mid-1970s...

To discover or rediscover.

Clips :

1961...first title and already first success. This is what we call an introduction to the subject, to say the least, ideal, there is no other word...

1961... especially since the group confirms in the wake that he is surely not there by chance. And that the success encountered on the first title was anything but a stroke of luck...

1962 ... it had started ideally but the year 1962 is not really going to be of the same level as the year 1961. No title classified ...

1964...despite titles of certain quality, the group does not manage to climb the slope and aligns the years without success. Beware danger as they say...

1965...there was going to be a time when the band was going to prove that this slight air hole was only temporary. It's now done with this fanfare return to the Charts...

1966...the group plays it safe and only releases one title a year. Afterwards, it is better to have a single title with certain success than several that pass 'through'...

1967...except it won't work every time. This year 1967 will also be a single title year which will not prevent this title from going under the radar...

1968... ditto for this one. The group does yo-yos in the Charts in an astonishing way and does not manage to stabilize. There are really the years with and the years without...

1969...so far, nothing works as expected. The group will therefore have to ask the right questions if he wants to survive the next decade...

1970... they asked themselves the right questions at first sight because here they are back on the front of the stage in an impressive way to say the least. It was time...

1971... not only did they come back in the race but above all they will now line up successes with more than obvious ease. It was enough just to give them time to break in...

1972... they also have a versatility of style that allows them to shine in all musical fields. This is where we recognize the best as always...

1972...the rise in power is impressive and allows them to radiate all over the planet. They will have taken a long time to take off but now that it's done nothing can stop them...

1972... they even won one of their biggest successes with this title. A title of such certain quality that it will bring fame and fortune to Jaki Graham in 1985, that is to say the power of the title...

1973...this title will do a little less well than its predecessor but still confirms the basic trend that the band is on its little cloud. Hope it lasts !

1973...the 'little' hit of the year. But when you see what is looming on the horizon, no need to worry about them and especially about the rest of the events...

1973...a year 1973 which sees them walking on water with a succession of very high caliber hits. Here they win a new prestigious star which is added to a prize list that grows from year to year in a way that is, to say the least, consistent...

1974...a most favorable mid-1970s for the group with an almost uninterrupted succession of successes. When it wants, it wants as they say !

1974...it doesn't happen to them much in the revisited version but it happens to them all the same. The proof with this cover of the title of Johnny Matis dating from the previous year. And on this one, their version will be stronger than the original, all good, little guys !

1974... when you take what is best at the musical level necessarily the result is up to par. The proof with this oh so successful association with Dionne Warwick !

1974...the number of titles produced each year is also impressive and underlines all the more the particularly high level of work carried out by the group in this middle of the decade...

1975...the years go by without the quality level dropping one iota. For now, it's the ideal scenario for the band and it's going to last like that for a few more years...

1975... a more than obvious know-how in the Intimist and which allows them to produce large caliber in this field. Good job once again...

1975... at the rate of a very big title per year, for the year 1975, it will be this one. The group unrolls with more than obvious ease and surely does not intend to stop in such a good way...

1975...for several years, at least 3 or 4 titles have been released each year. A level of inspiration among the best of the moment and which allows them to stay ahead of the pack without forcing their talent too much...

1976...no major changes in sight, the group is still on the same dynamic of success. The titles follow one another, as do the successes and all is well in the best of all worlds...

1976...the headline of the year 1976 will be this one. And headlines like this they have already released a number of them which once again underlines a qualitative regularity among the best of the moment...

1977... the quantitative level is maintained but it is rather the qualitative level which will be dulled somewhat during this second part of the decade. On the other hand, you can't be great all the time, that's for sure...

1977 ... we will be satisfied anyway with what they continue to offer. Anyway, it could be that this slight drop in speed does not last forever...

1978...it will still last the time of this year 1978. Rest assured, they still appear in the Charts, that is not the problem. It's just the level of success that is a little treading water...

1979...it could be that this last year of the decade sees them return to the race in a spectacular way to say the least. Not on this title but on the next one...

1979 ... it's a new cover that will allow them to make talking about them again in a consistent way. All thanks to this revisited version of the Four Seasons title dating from 1966. HU-GE !

1980...since covers bring them luck, they do it again with this cover of Sam Cooke's title dating from 1961. With the key to a new planetary mega hit to add to their prize list !

1980...a mega hit which will unfortunately be the last. Because the adventure will continue but the level of success achieved will no longer have anything to do with that achieved in previous years...

1981...it's clear that the 80s won't have much to do with the 70s in terms of success. So it will take some getting used to...

1981...we are not talking about pure and simple disappearance from the Charts but about a fall, to say the least severe, of the level reached. The main thing is that they are still there a little bit...

1981...the only good news for the moment is the fact that they have adapted to the latest musical developments of the moment. It's already that...

1982...the year 1981 will have allowed them to save a minimum of the furniture but the year 1982 will not be so lenient. Hard law of the trade...

1982 ... we will come close to leaving the road during this year and this on several occasions. Times are getting harder and harder for the group, it is clear...

1982...they decide to revisit here a title by Billy Walker dating from 1961. A pretty title full of finesse which allows them to show once again that in the 'emotional' register, they deliver serious !

1983... the level of success is in free fall as well as the production of titles. A little over 20 years after their debut, the group is really struggling to find a second wind...

1984... they still manage to make a few big hits here and there. We are not talking about major success but success all the same, enough in any case to remind the general public that they still exist...

1984...a title which will not even be classified and which frankly deserved to be. The problem is that the group is now a thing of the past for the young generation and that, nothing or anyone, or can do anything...

1985...a year 1985 that will see them go through on all the titles released. The situation of the group is getting worse from year to year and it is really becoming more and more difficult to simply continue to exist...

1985...a rhythmic title that works very well. But which, like its predecessor, will go completely unnoticed. Sometimes you don't have to try to understand...

1987...an empty year in 1986 and a return in relative form in 1987. In any case, not enough to hope for a possible providential reversal of the situation...

1989... they will still manage to reach the end of the 80s but the heart is no longer there, it is clear. Is it worth trying the transition to the next decade, good question...

1990... suddenly they prefer to ensure and above all surround themselves with a legend of music to try to get back on their feet. But even the legendary Dionne won't be able to do much for them...

2021...while we thought the case had been definitively folded for decades, here they are back in this decade of 2020. A totally unexpected and above all unexpected return...

2024...
