At the origin of Rap...

Sugarhill Gang is an American band formed in 1979 in Englewood and composed of Michael Wright, Henry Jackson and Guy O’Brien.

Little information concerning them except that they will remain in the musical history of the 80s mainly for the enormous title "Rapper's delight", title which will remain in the history as being the first Single of Rap to enter in the Top40 of the American Bilbord Hot 100.

As such, they deserved this article.

1979 ... the title of a lifetime, the one that makes you fit One Shot into the legend, the one with a capital L. The group simply signs here one of the biggest Dance hits of the end of the 20th century, nothing only that. All thanks to a very free cover of the Chic title "Good times" and above all thanks to a style of phrasing singing never seen before. MO-NU-MEN-TAL !

1980...a sequel that can't compete with the huge previous title as the bar was set so high. In any case, a nice title that shows that they are good in all areas, it must be said...

1980...they really amaze with their ability to go from one extreme to the other side style. Not much to do with 'Rapper's delight', that's for sure...

1980...only one title will be classified during this year 1980 and this despite the presence of the previous titles. Too bad because there is quality in all that...

1981 ... when rappers cover one of the biggest standards of the 60s, the result can only be astonishing. The best known version is that of the Shadows but the original, the real one, is attributed to Bert Weedon and dates from 1960...

1981 ... a truly unique style that sets them apart from the crowd, that's clear. Even if the vocals part is very minimalist, the melodic part, it holds up largely...

1982 ... a single title year but a quality title, once again. It is clear that the group begins to 'fall into line' while still managing to retain some of its originality...

1983 ... an originality which begins to tire the general public and which no longer really finds its place the further we advance in time. It feels like the end of it all...

1983 ... success is essentially limited to R&B customers now. The group hangs on but its hour of glory is over, it's clear...

1984 ... the fall is gradual and, above all, irremediable. The group will release 3 titles during this year 1984 and none will be classified. When it doesn't want anymore, it doesn't want anymore ...

1984...and yet they are far from being unworthy, that's clear. The start of their career was dazzling but the rest was more complicated to manage than expected...

1984...it's hard to understand how the adventure could have ended so abruptly, but unfortunately it's true...

1984...there was everything that was needed in any case for this adventure to last a little longer. Hard law of the trade...

1985 ... the final twilight. Last year of existence and especially last Single. That will not change the situation unfortunately. An adventure that nevertheless produced one of the biggest dance hits of all time. Not that bad !

1999...we thought we would never see them again and yet here they are almost 14 years later, who would have thought it possible, not many people that's for sure...

1999...a return that will be somewhat unexpected unfortunately. It must be said that the 14 years of absence did not help...

1999...a new opus that would have deserved a little more recognition because there was quality in all of that...

1999...a return that will not have served much purpose in the end. Afterwards, they will have at least tried and just for that respect as they say...

2009... it was Bob Sinclar who would put them back in the race in a totally unexpected and above all unhoped-for way almost 10 years later. Incredible but true !
