The Communards is an English group formed in 1985 by Jimmy Sommerville, ex Bronski Beat and Richard Coles.
The name "The Communards" would be a reference to the Parisian uprising in 1871 during the Commune.
Their first Single "You are my world" was released in 1985 and was a definite success.
But it was a year later, in 1986, that they knew their biggest hit with the cover of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes "Don’t leave me this way".
Single which makes a huge success on the planetary level and will become at the same time the best-selling title of the whole year 86 across the Channel.
The Single "So cold the night" which came out shortly afterwards also performed well.
In 1987, the album "Red" was released, an album from which a new mega hit was to be extracted with "Never can say goodbye", a version inspired by the title of Gloria Gaynor in 1974.
1988 will be the year of their last major success with the Single "There’s more to love". But it will also be the year when Jimmy Sommerville takes his freedom to sail towards a solo career.
